Cockett syndrome: understanding, diagnosing and treating pelvic venous compression<\/h1>\n

Cockett syndrome<\/b> ,<\/span> also known as<\/span> May<\/span> -Thurner syndrome<\/b> ,<\/span><\/i> is a venous pathology caused by<\/span> compression of the left iliac vein<\/b> by the right iliac artery.<\/span>
<\/span>This compression disrupts the return of blood to the heart and causes<\/span> poor venous circulation<\/b> , often leading to<\/span> recurrent varicose veins<\/b> or<\/span> phlebitis<\/b> , and especially to pelvic congestion syndrome of obstructive origin. In advanced cases, the kidneys can be affected.<\/span> <\/p>\n

What is Cockett syndrome?<\/h2>\n

Nutcracker syndrome is a compression of the left renal vein by the aorta and superior mesenteric artery. Venous return is hindered by this compression and the dilation of the poorly draining veins causes the symptoms. There may be repercussions on the kidney. <\/span><\/p>\n

This syndrome occurs preferentially in women and can manifest as the equivalent of pelvic congestion syndrome with pelvic pain or pain localized to the left flank, hematuria and proteinuria.<\/span><\/p>\n

Angio-CT scan is a good examination to confirm the diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n

Before proposing treatment, several consultations are necessary to assess the discomfort, the impact on daily life, and any possible kidney manifestations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes gaining weight in very thin subjects can improve or eliminate clinical signs by reducing compression of the renal vein.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historical treatments are surgical (transposition and release of the renal vein) but it appears that the placement of stents in the renal vein gives excellent results in several publications without the risks of surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n

When possible, we favour endovascular treatments for left renal vein compression syndrome. <\/span><\/p>\n

Associated pelvic varicose veins can be treated at the same time by embolization.<\/span><\/p>\n
